Two Freight Train Cars Derailed at Ostrava Station

On Saturday, May 23, 2026, two cars of a freight train derailed at Ostrava Main Station. The incident halted traffic on the main rail corridor between Ostrava and Bohumín and significantly disrupted rail service toward Poland and Slovakia. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident; damage was limited primarily to the track superstructure and infrastructure within the yard.

At the request of the Railway Administration’s Fire and Rescue Service, SWIETELSKY Rail CZ also joined the rescue operation. While firefighters managed to return one of the derailed cars to the tracks using hydraulic equipment, the other required the deployment of a rail crane.

Our locomotive with the Gottwald GS 100.06 T rail crane was therefore dispatched to the scene, facing a journey of nearly 400 km. Given the maximum transport speed of 50 km/h and the need to reach the destination as quickly as possible, this was a relatively challenging logistical operation. However, thanks to meticulous organization, we were able to ensure a smooth journey—the train was classified as an essential emergency vehicle and was given priority on the tracks. Upon arrival, our specialists, in cooperation with firefighters, immediately carried out preparatory work and subsequently successfully returned the derailed car to the tracks – less than 16 hours after receiving the request to resolve the emergency!

Although damage to the railway infrastructure prevented the immediate resumption of service, our intervention significantly contributed to accelerating the subsequent repairs and the return of rail service to normal operations. The entire operation reaffirmed the importance of rapid coordination, experience, and the preparedness of specialized railway teams during emergencies.
