Renovation of Republic Square in Pilsen (Phase I)

Plzen Namesti 01

With the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone, we have launched the revitalisation of the western part of Republic Square together with the City of Plzeň in western Bohemia. This project concerns one of the most important public spaces in the region and is being carried out in a strong historical and cultural context. The square lies at the heart of a protected historic area and is surrounded by key landmarks, including the cathedral, the town hall, the bishop’s residence and historic townhouses.

What is the focus of Phase I?

The current phase focuses on the western side of the square. Its aim is to adapt the public space to the needs of contemporary urban life while fully respecting the historical significance of the site.

As part of the works:

  • a new tree-lined avenue of 14 elm trees will be planted (the trees, sourced from the Netherlands, are already in the Czech Republic; they have a trunk circumference of approximately 35 cm and a height of around 2.5–3 metres),
  • traffic arrangements will be modified, with the area becoming a pedestrian zone with limited access for vehicles,
  • new street furniture will be installed, including artistically designed stone benches,
  • the new avenue will also feature two misting units to provide cooling during hot weather,
  • necessary relocations of utility networks will be carried out (including district heating, gas pipeline, public lighting, fibre-optic network and adjustments to overhead traction lines).

The design of the revitalisation is based on a proposal by the MAAUS studio.

Building on Familiar Ground

Republic Square is not a new location for us. In the past, we were involved, for example, in the construction of the modern fountains located in the corners of the square, which have since become an integral part of its appearance.
